The UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths meets Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin SalmanThe United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths met in Riyadh on Thursday 11-8-2019 with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz.

The meeting discussed "the latest developments on the Yemeni arena and the efforts exerted towards them," according to the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA), which said Griffiths "congratulated the Crown Prince on the success of the Kingdom's efforts to reach the signing of the Riyadh agreement between the Yemeni government and the Southern Transitional Council."

The Saudi Crown Prince said that his country is keen on "everything that serves the interests of the Yemeni people and the security and stability of Yemen," hoping that "the Riyadh agreement will usher in wider understandings among the Yemeni people to reach a comprehensive political solution to end the Yemeni crisis."

Last Tuesday, the Yemeni government and the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council signed the Riyadh agreement to end the conflict between the two sides, whose forces have fought and exchanged control in southern provinces since August.

The agreement includes key clauses and annexes to political, economic, military and security arrangements between the government and the transitional council.

Yemen has been devastated by a five-year armed conflict between the government backed by the Saudi-led coalition and the Iran-backed Houthis. The conflict erupted after the Houthis ousted the government and seized power in late 2014.
