The Nation Press -

From 15–25 September 2010 visitors will be able to experience about 275 events, featuring 250 writers and artists in readings, discussions, poetry nights, concerts, the international SLAM Revue and film adaptations of contemporary literature.

This year there will be a special focus on the literatures of eastern Europe and the political work of remembrance – for example during the conference “Resolution versus silence: secret police, artists and coming to terms with communist dictatorships.” The main venue this year will be the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, due to renovation work in the Haus der Berliner Festspiele.

On 15 September 2010 the anniversary festival will open with a speech by the Spanish author Juan Goytisolo (introduction: Sigrid Löffler). Afterwards, there will be a performance by the ska and reggae band Sobaky v kosmosi (Dogs in space) from Ukraine.

Over the next ten days, internationally and nationally renowned authors will read from their works. They include Swetlana Alexijewitsch (Belarus), Aharon Appelfeld (Israel), Rana Dasgupta (Britian/India), Nuruddin Farah (Somalia), Joshua Ferris (USA), Elizabeth Gilbert (USA), Durs Grünbein (Germany), Wladimir Kaminer (Germany), Natalja Kljutscharjowa (Russia), Alberto Manguel (Argentina), Yann Martel (Canada), Eva Menasse (Germany), Sergej Minajew (Russia), Sofi Oksanen (Finland), Boris Pahor (Slovenia), German Sadulajew (Russia), Hans Joachim Schädlich (Germany), Olga Tokarczuk (Poland), Dubravka Ugrešić (Croatia) and Liao Yiwu (China). Young authors including Tishani Doshi (India), Nino Haratischwili (Germany), Sabrina Janesch (Germany), Nicolai Lilin (Russia/Italy) and Philip Meyers (USA) will present their debut novels. Two politicians, Thilo Sarrazin and Peer Steinbrück, will also be reading from their books during the ilb.

The International Children’s and Youth Literature section of the programme once again features famous names such as the renowned author and illustrator Shaun Tan (Australia) and other award-winning guests – Kate DiCamillo (USA), Tobias Elsässer (Germany), Sergej Lukianenko (Kazakhstan/Russia) and Peter Pohl (Sweden).

The ilb has once again been able to secure popular actors as readers, including Burghart Klaußner, Ulrich Matthes, Nina Petri, Tom Schilling and Anna Thalbach.

The International Literature Festival Berlin is organised by the Peter Weiss Foundation for Art and Politics and the Berliner Festspiele in cooperation with the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. It takes place under the umbrella of the German UNESCO Commission and is made possible through the support of the Capital Culture Fund.
